While typing this post, I am still listening/watching the WWDC presentation in which Apple unveiled all their new products to the all developers attending the conference. Honestly, I am often annoyed with their strict regulations and rules, simply because they hinder me in serving my EU customers. But, I have got to give it to these guys: I am immensely impressed and amused at the same time watching this presentation. Everything they come up with and the way it is presented is just simply genius!
Some companies make very brave attempts in competing with Apple. Last weekend for example, Palm launched their Palm Pre. A smart phone about which the press rumors: 'Forget the iPhone'. It is to target the business customers. They sold out in all Sprint stores over one weekend as Palm had only managed to manufacture around 65,000 new phones. Today, Apple announces the launch of the iPhone 3GS, which looks the same as the 3G, BUT with all these cool features: video recording and editing, voice control, cut/copy/paste, shake to undo, search feature, compass AND tethering. Thethewhat? Tethering is a feature that I have been craving for, when you are in a public place and there is no wireless internet to hook your mac up to. I have tried frantically to activate the bluetooth feature on my iPhone to start a connection, but alas. The new 3GS will function as a modem for your iPhone. Yay!
Now, the other great thing is that people already owning the 3G do not have to throw their treasured phone in the garbage. They will be able to download the iPhone OS 3.0 software from iTunes and have the exact same iPhone as the 3GS! How great is that?! The new phone will be in AT&T and Apple stores on June 19th and can actually be reserved already. Two day earlier, on the 17th, existing users of the 3G will be able to download the OS 3.0 software. Personally, I can't wait! Do we still have to talk about the cost? I remember feeling a little nervous about making the purchase. The same night, while exploring the all the features and syncing all my stuff, I had already forgotten about the money. Wow, this phone had become my lifeline instantly. For those of you who are still hesitant: the new 3GS will start at $199, the 'old' 3G is available at $99 now. You would have to sign the two year AT&T agreement for that price. Without that agreement, the price goes up significantly.
Along the presentation of the new iPhone and OS software launched are the MacBook Pro family, available as of today in the Apples stores and at B&H. As well as Snow Leopard, the newest operating system, available in September for only $29.
The keywords across the board are: better, faster, more battery power more memory as well as greener.
The MacBook Pro's look extremely impressive and even though they are better and run on the new now Leopard operating system, some Books have even been lowered in price. Thumbs up for Apple. I truly enjoyed the presentation. I wish everyone happy shopping! Correction: A fellow commenter on this article: Buyer's Remorse: 5 Gadgets We Should Never Have Bought pointed out that with the OS 3.0 software the 3G is not upgraded fully into a 3GS. Your 3G won't have the same speed, no camera, no voice control and no compass.
Update: The OS 3.0 can be downloaded as of today 6/17. For more info on the exact features: The New iPhone Software is a Must-Have Upgrade.
