Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 Gets “Wild”

Tuesday June 19th '12, 3:22 pm

The launch of Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 has readers everywhere buzzing. How does a book club evolve to a 2.0 status, you ask? Not with robots; we checked. But after a two-year hiatus, the club is returning with a virtual makeover, updated for social media and our digitally-driven times. So if you’re in the mood for a wild read, join the club. Seriously.

The first selection in Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 is “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail,” by Cheryl Strayed. Readers can enjoy a special book club edition in print or as an e-book with margin notes and Oprah’s favorite passages highlighted. Highlight and share your own favorite parts on Facebook and Twitter, and ask questions or chat with Strayed on the various platforms. Special features on the book club’s site include pictures from the trail and interviews between Oprah and Strayed.

On a video released to announce the 2.0 Book Club, Winfrey describes herself as “on the edge of her seat” while reading it, wishing she still had the book club in which to share it. Those of you who love to read know what it’s like to finish a book and desperately want to talk about it. Perhaps your reading circle isn’t on quite the same scale as Oprah’s, but talking about a story while you read it makes the whole process a richer, deeper experience.

“Wild” is the true story of Strayed’s treacherous 1,100 mile hike on the Pacific Crest Trail. What she hoped would be a spiritual journey resulted in bruises, sore feet and moments of pure trail magic. In the launch video, Oprah goes on to say that you’ll put yourselves in Cheryl’s uncomfortably tight boots, imagining yourself on the trail. She also calls it a stimulating, thought-provoking read that is about being brave when you didn’t think you could be.

Prior to Oprah’s praise, “Wild” had already managed to hit bestseller lists and rake in acclaim from critics. In fact, Reese Witherspoon purchased the movie rights for her production company months ago. The Oscar-winning actress also announced plans to play the role of Strayed herself. In an article for The New York Times, Dwight Garner wrote “This book is as loose and sexy and dark as an early Lucinda Williams song. It’s got a punk spirit and makes an earthy and American sound.”

Available through your Nook and in every e-reader format, Oprah could not have made the Book Club 2.0 edition of “Wild” more accessible to readers all over the globe. Through USUnlocked, you can purchase the special edition and join millions of readers across the globe on the 1,100 mile journey through the wild. Best of all, you don’t have to wait for someone you know to read it before talking about the tally of lost toe nails, the juicy scenes and the healing power of being alone in nature. Join the club!
