Banana Republic

Banana Republic was founded in 1978 initially with a safari theme but Gap Inc. purchased them in 1983 and rebranded it to a more upscale clothing store. The company has 500 stores in the U.S and over 100 outside of the U.S.

Today Banana Republic is a premier destination for modern clothing, rooted in an explorer spirit.

History

The original Banana Republic was founded by Mel and Patricia Ziegler in 1978 and was originally called “Banana Republic Travel & Safari Clothing Company”. They opened their first store in Northern California.

Gap Inc. acquired Banana Republic in 1983, eventually re branding it as a mainstream luxury clothing retailer and phased out the safari theme.
